Programme Community Workshops
An extensive schools and community outreach programme was based in four Gillespie, Kidd & Coia buildings throughout Scotland and worked with different areas of design to explore very different aspects of these unique buildings. This was combined with exhibition-based workshops for school groups at The Lighthouse. Our Lady of Good Counsel - St. Denis’s Primary School
Model Making - it’s brutal!
Twenty-four Primary 6 and 7 students worked with an architect to explore Our Lady of Good Counsel Church and create large-scale models of various detailed sections of the church. Working with maths to explore scale and experimenting with 3D building techniques, the class worked inside the church as well as in the classroom to explore the unique brickwork and patterns of the church. They experimented and played with the architectural and atmospheric changes that can be created by changing aspects of colour and light, experiencing how these changes affect the building’s ambience.
St. Bride’s Church- St. Andrew’s and St. Bride’s High School
From outside to inside
Studying landscape, setting and transitions between outside and inside eight Higher pupils from St. Andrew’s and St. Bride’s High School examined the journey from a normal everyday space into something special and sacred and how architecture creates this environment. Looking at the St Bride’s R.C. Church entrance from it’s paving, entrance detail and brick pattern work and how this develops into the church itself, the students created stop frame animations from digital photography to produce a short film. The final two films illustrate how people move and use the building, how the architecture exaggerates and constrains movement and how this modern building’s stature changes with and without peoples’ daily interaction.
Knightswood Secondary School

Examining and researching graphic patterns created in the architecture of Gillespie, Kidd & Coia, twenty Secondary 2 pupils explored scale, shapes, patterns and repetition that creates the graphic impact in these modernist buildings. Using their school as stimulus the pupils took photographs of abstract shapes created by the bold architecture. Using techniques such as digital image manipulation, text art and architectural drawing formats they created logos and graphic representations that illustrated the key architectural features of their school. The final outcome was to be used by the school on stationery that can be used to disseminate their architectural heritage to the community through the school’s mail-outs.
Cumbernauld College and Sacred Heart Cumbernauld
Life on the Inside
Taking elements of Cumbernauld College and Sacred Heart R.C. church, fifteen college students compared and contrasted the architectural styles between these two public buildings, examining the details and styles of the church and college. By examining the different boundaries and themes the architects explored within the two building and discussing different usages the students created three interior panels that illustrated the clear differences and celebrated the similar architectural styles between these two buildings
Gillespie, Kidd & Coia- Free Family Workshop

Inspired by the buildings of Gillespie, Kidd & Coia, a series of free workshops gave the opportunity to step into the role of an architect to create your own modern structure. Working individually or with friends and family, the participants saw their designs come to life.
